Fells Involvement

Hiking in the Fells, have you ever wondered who made the effort to construct culverts and rock steps which makes our way much easier?  One answer to this question may be found in the work that the Student Conservation Association has carried out in the Fells for many years.  In  summers a crew of students from all over the US come to the Fells, committed to making our trails better.  The work of their 50 year old organization is testament to the spirit and dedication of youth.

The photographs here were taken in the summer of 2005 when the SCA worked in the Winchester section of the Fells.  This past summer another SCA crew worked to create rock steps near the Cascade in the eastern Fells.  In doing so they were able to link new steps with steps which were uncovered having been there for many generations.  [One way the Cascade may be found is by parking at gate 58 (end of Goodyear Avenue in Melrose) and after entering the forest taking a right turn on the white blazed trail.]  For additional photos click here.
