Restoration Hikes

The Friends offers seasonal opportunities for restoring healthy habitats to sections of the Fells which have been inundated with invasive species that crowd out native plants.

These hikes, led by Walter Kittredge, introduce participants to native plant habitats, and provide training in how to identify invasive woody shrubs and vines, which are removed by digging them out. Volunteers also help with the lighter work of carrying and stacking brush.

Gloves, tools, and verification of two community service hours will be provided.

Hike 'n' Carry

The Friends offers all-ages cleanup hikes as great ways for individuals and families to meet up and both enjoy and improve the Fells in a single afternoon.

A typical Hike 'n' Carry afternoon involves an hour or so of hiking along one or more trails (picking up rubbish along the way) and an hour or so of cleanup work at a specific site.

Gloves, trash bags, and verification of two community service hours will be provided.  Volunteers should dress comfortably and bring their own water.

Hike 'n' Carry events are scheduled approximately once per month in the spring, summer and fall.  Check the Fells Events Calendar for upcoming dates.

Volunteer "Work Days" for Groups

Friends of the Fells coordinates with DCR staff to host groups of 15-50 volunteers from local organizations interested in peforming a day of service in the Fells.  Group work days may include cleanup, invasives removal, trail improvements, trail closures, or other needed projects.

Due to the time required for planning and permitting, please provide 4-6 weeks advance notice when requesting a group opportunity.  Please complete our Volunteer Form to communicate your group's interest and availability.

Events Calendar Distribution

Any easy way to spread the word is to print our December events calendar flyer and post it at a school, library, or local business bulletin board in your neighborhood.

Periodic Volunteer Tasks

Friends of the Fells sends out a periodic call for volunteers to help with recurring needs.  If you wish to be added to our list to support one of these needs, please complete the Volunteer Form and indicate one or both of these as "interests":

• Mailing Assistance – Assist with preparing our periodic mailings (labeling, stamping, etc.)  We will send out a call for volunteers a few days in advance of each mailing event so that you can join us when you are able.

• Outreach Events & Activities - Staffing tables at various community events to raise awareness regarding the Friends, sell merchandise (maps, tshirts, etc.), and recruit new members and donations.  We always pair new persons with experienced people at our literature tables for on the job training.
